The world was once one filled with magic and wonder. Then The Calamity happened, and that all came to an end. Out of the ashes of the world before rose the Gyraxian Assiociation of Magi (GAMi). They rebuilt Gyraxia in their secretly tyrannical way, and even brought back magic in a form they could control.
But this isn’t a game about them. This is a game about you: those who have come to overthrow GAMi and free Gyraxia. It’s about spellcasting not based on limitations, but on heart-felt truths affecting the world itself. It’s not about anyone else but who you choose to become and what you want to make of the world.
Also, it’s a game where you’ll make a Zine to use as a character sheet!
Welcome to Virtuemancy: Revised Edition! An original system influenced by systems and works like Apocalypse World, Cortex Prime, Don’t Rest Your Head, The Quiet Year, classic dungeon crawls, Nineteen-Eighty-Four, John Carpenter's They Live, that one Apple ad with the sledgehammer, Jet Set Radio, the 80s OVA boom, multiple songs, and zine culture itself. Dice of multiple sizes, paper, tape or glue, some imagination and this rulebook are all you'll need to free Gyraxia from tyranny!
You'll be playing in a version of the setting unique to your table, and instead of playing as traditional RPG classes, you'll play as one of the four Virtuemancers!
- The Blade: Dedicated to overcoming obstacles and strife with their wits and a scar of the magic from The World Before to shatter and destroy that which holds Gyraxia back. Oh, and they have a weapon or item that they'll use to kick some ass that is bound to them by destiny. The item can be a basketball, and your campaign could technically be an unofficial sequel to Charles Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden.
- The Eye: Nothing happens that The Eye does not know about. They come up with solutions to complex problems and have a knack for finding the opposition’s weak points that otherwise would never see the light of day. Yes, they'd probably know your Twitter password.
- The Memoir: To The Memoir, everything is useful in some way. They find power within items and ideas that others would find useless, much to the chagrin of their enemies. They even have access to the Fount of Knowledge, a mystical plane where the wisdom of endless ages resides, including what would have happened in the sequel to The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension.
- The Dream: The Dream resents the stifling control GAMi is attempting to exert on the people of Gyraxia. Their magical, inspirational spells rally the public and frighten the oppressors. Also, creating cake golems to break down actual physical barriers while having them decorated with fondant saying "Fuck HAMMER" is a legitimate option.
